Different Types of Engineering
If you are a student and are thinking about a career choice for the future then engineering is a good option. With a degree in engineering you may be able to get a job anywhere in the world and the pay is very good. The best thing about engineering is that there are so many different options available to you in terms of the various fields. You could choose to study in any one of a number of different engineering fields such as chemical engineering, subsea engineering, mechanical engineering and many more. Below are a few examples of the various fields of engineering you could go into:
Biomedical Engineering. This field involves applying technology and engineering principles to medicine. An example of what a biomedical engineer will do is tissue engineering which involves restoring, maintaining and enhancing tissues and organs.
Agricultural Engineering. In this field agricultural engineers will apply science to farming and agricultural production. There are elements of a number of engineering fields in this area such as civil, mechanical and chemical.
Ceramic Engineering. This is where objects are designed and created from non metallic materials and will include purifying raw materials, producing and forming compounds and studying the composition, structure and properties of these compounds.
Civil Engineering. In civil engineering jobs the engineer will have to deal with designing, constructing and maintaining public structures such as buildings, roads, bridges and canals for example.
Subsea Engineering. Subsea engineering involves the study of undersea issues of gas and oil exploitation.
Electrical Engineering. This involves the study of electronics, electromagnetism and electricity. Electrical engineers take care of designing and implementing electrical systems.
Computer Engineering. This is a mix of electronic engineering and computer science and involves the design of hardware and software as well as solutions development.
Industrial Engineering. Industrial engineers are concerned with developing and improving integrated systems.
Environmental Engineering. The environmental engineer will take care of using scientific principles to improve the environment. The aim of the environmental engineer is to find ways to ensure that our water, air and land are safe. Another role is to try and reverse damage caused to the environment by pollution.
Nuclear Engineering. Finding ways of practically applying nuclear energy is the role of the nuclear engineer. This involves developing and maintaining power plants, nuclear reactors and weapons.
Mechanical Engineering. This is probably one of the oldest fields of engineering and is concerned with the design, creation and production of machinery.
Materials Engineering. Materials engineers are concerned with how matter is applied to technology and science. The structure of materials is studied at molecular level and elements of chemistry and physics will be applied.
